Old Navajo Sterling Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace
20 finely stamped box-bow squash blossoms, each measures 1 3/8" long and 1/2" wide
23 natural turquoise gemstones (vary in size from 5/16" to 3/8")
The turquoise are a lovely azure blue with silvery matrix
Stones are firmly set in serrated bezels
134 hand wrought 8mm silver beads securely strung on original sterling chain with hook clasp
Overall length of beads 27" ~ Naja measures 2" in length, and 2 1/8" in width
Lovely aged patina or polish to a shimmering luster
Very fine condition for age; all original, no repairs
No maker's hallmarks, circa 1950
Necklace weighs 140 grams


 
The squash blossom motif evolved from the pomegranate flowers of Spain.


  

 

 

The form of the silver naja, or pendant, at the end of the squash blossom necklace
is traceable to Moorish Spain and even farther back in time
to a device used to ward off the evil eye.
